Honoring National Family Caregiver Month

November marks National Family Caregiver Month, a time to recognize and honor the dedication of millions of Americans who provide essential care to loved ones. These caregivers are the unsung heroes of our healthcare system, offering physical, emotional, and financial support often without compensation or recognition.

According to the 2025 AARP and National Alliance for Caregiving report, there are now 63 million family caregivers in the United States—an increase of 20 million since 2015. This represents a 45% growth over the past decade, with nearly 1 in 4 adults providing care for someone with a medical condition or disability.

Family caregivers face immense challenges. Nearly half report significant financial strain, with average out-of-pocket expenses reaching $7,200 annually. Physically, caregivers often perform complex medical tasks and provide around-the-clock care, leading to exhaustion and health issues. Emotionally, 1 in 5 caregivers rate their own health as fair or poor, and many experience depression and anxiety. Social isolation is another major concern, as caregiving responsibilities often limit time for personal relationships and community engagement.

The economic value of unpaid caregiving is staggering. AARP estimates that family caregivers contribute services worth over $600 billion annually. This figure surpasses all out-of-pocket healthcare spending in the U.S., highlighting the critical role caregivers play in supporting older adults and the broader healthcare system.

Organizations like AARP, the John A. Hartford Foundation, and the Caregiver Action Alliance continue to advocate for policies that support caregivers, including tax credits, paid leave, and access to respite care. As we honor caregivers this November, let us also commit to building a society that values and supports their vital contributions.
